The Superior Court hires two (2) first-year law students to work in the Research Facility in downtown Toronto each summer. The duties of the summer students primarily consist of providing legal research for the Office of the Chief Justice. Summer students will also work extensively with the judicial law clerks and judges of the Superior Court. Summer students will get experience in civil law, criminal law, family law, and administrative law. A summer student position is excellent preparation for a future clerkship.

Application Process

The court seeks applicants possessing strong legal research and writing skills, strong organizational skills and excellent communication skills.

Only first-year law students are eligible to apply. Summer student positions are held for three months beginning in mid-May and ending in mid-August. All summer students are paid in accordance with the salaries of first-year law students at the Law student programs | ontario.ca. Please visit their website for further information.

Summer student applications are due by 5:00 pm on Wednesday, January 20, 2027.

Please submit the following by email only to SCJ.summer@ontario.ca:

• a cover letter;
• a current curriculum vitae;
• official transcripts of law school and undergraduate grades. If official transcripts for the fall law-school term are not available by the application deadline of January 20, indicate in your cover letter when they will be available and forward a copy as soon as they are released. Students must submit an updated copy of their transcript to complete their application; and
• one letter of reference referring to your academic, professional and/or communication skills. The letter of reference can be from an employer, an undergraduate or graduate professor, or a law school professor. If the referee has requested that a letter of reference remain sealed, it may be sent by email to SCJ.summer@ontario.ca or regular mail to the address found below.

Interview Process

Candidates called for an interview will be notified by phone on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2027, starting at 8 a.m.

Interviews will occur in-person in downtown Toronto during the week of Feb. 16, 2027.

Offers to successful candidates will by contacted on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2027, at starting at 5 p.m.
