{"id":103,"date":"2019-01-17T12:50:11","date_gmt":"2019-01-17T17:50:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ontariocourts.ca\/coa\/?page_id=103"},"modified":"2026-09-02T13:37:01","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T17:37:01","slug":"site-home","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.ontariocourts.ca\/coa\/","title":{"rendered":"Home"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 class=\"sidebar-heading news-heading\">News<\/h2>\n<h3>Public Statement by Ontario\u2019s three Chief Justices<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariocourts.ca\/en\/public-statement-cybersecurity.htm\">Public Statement by Ontario\u2019s three Chief Justices Regarding a Cybersecurity Incident Related to the Ontario Courts<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(September 2, 2026)<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" width=\"200\" \/>\n<h3><em>Rules of Civil Procedure<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Today, new amendments to the <em>Rules of Civil Procedure <\/em>came into force. In particular, the amendments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Require that any person signing a factum or expert report must certify that they are satisfied any quotations purported to be taken from an authority accurately reflect the text of the authority, and incorporate this requirement into the Form 53 Acknowledgment of Expert\u2019s Duty [rules 4.06.1, 53.03];<\/li>\n<li>Clarify that when motions for leave to appeal under specified provisions of the\u00a0<em>Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Companies\u2019 Creditors Arrangement Act<\/em>\u00a0are heard by a single judge, those motions are subject to the ordinary rule 61.16 appellate single judge motion procedure [rule 61.03.1];<\/li>\n<li>Revise the procedure for a party to bring a motion in the Court of Appeal or Divisional Court for review of an order made on motion by a single judge of either court under sections 7(5) and 21(5) of the\u00a0<em>Courts of Justice Act<\/em>, by allowing more time to serve and file the notice of motion, reducing the time for either party to file subsequent materials, and creating a presumption that the motion is to be heard in writing [rule 61.16]; and<\/li>\n<li>Eliminate the requirement for lawyers to estimate the time needed for motions in the Court of Appeal and Divisional Court [rules 61.03; 61.16].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please refer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/laws\/regulation\/r26275\">Ontario Regulation 275\/26<\/a>\u00a0for the full text of the amendments.<\/p>\n<p>(September 1, 2026)<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" width=\"200\" \/>\n<h3>Judicial Appointment<\/h3>\n<p><a class=\"outlink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/department-justice\/news\/2026\/07\/minister-of-justice-and-attorney-general-of-canada-announces-judicial-appointments-in-the-province-of-ontario.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Justice Lisa Brownstone Appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(July 6, 2026)<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" width=\"200\" \/>\n<h3>Amendments to the Criminal Practice Direction<\/h3>\n<p>The Court of Appeal released today one amendment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontariocourts.ca\/coa\/how-to-proceed-court\/practice-directions-guidelines\/criminal\/\">Criminal Practice Direction<\/a>. This amendment, which is found at s. 16 of the Criminal Practice Direction, provides direction regarding appeals and motions involving information subject to confidential informer privilege.<\/p>\n<p>(July 3, 2026)<\/p>\n<hr align=\"left\" width=\"200\" \/>\n<h3>2023-2024 Annual Report<\/h3>\n<p>The Court of Appeal is pleased to share the Court\u2019s <a href=\"\/coa\/about-the-court\/archives\/#Annual_Report\">2023-2024 Report<\/a>.
