The Court of Appeal released today two amendments to the Criminal Practice Direction<\/a>.<\/p>\n First, ss. 6.1.5(2) and 6.2.3(2) are amended to set out the process for requesting additional time for oral argument if an application for leave to appeal a decision of the Summary Conviction Appeal Court is granted. The standard time for oral argument in such cases is 30 minutes for the appellant and 15 minutes for the respondent.<\/p>\n Second, s. 6.1.6(1) is amended to clarify that motions to intervene are determined by the Chief Justice, the Associate Chief Justice or a judge designated by either of them.<\/p>\n (June 3, 2026)<\/p>\n SAVE THE DATE: On January 30, 2027, the Court of Appeal for Ontario will host the third Rosenberg Mentorship Moot. Inspired by the Honourable Marc Rosenberg \u2014 a judge on the court from 1995 to 2015 \u2014 the moot pairs junior counsel with experienced Crown and defence mentors. Participants argue a mock criminal appeal in English or in French before Court of Appeal judges and special guest judges. Mooter application materials will be available in September 2026.<\/p>\n (May 21, 2026)<\/p>\n The Honourable Bertha Wilson was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario, effective January 2, 1976. She was the first woman appointed as a Canadian appellate judge and first woman appointed to sit as a judge on the Supreme Court of Canada.<\/p>\n The Court of Appeal for Ontario, together with the Law Society of Ontario, hosted a sold-out Symposium on March 27, 2026, celebrating this extraordinary jurist, with a legacy that endures to this day. A tribute video, which premiered at the event, is now available<\/a> for viewing. The whole program is also now available as an on-demand webcast<\/a> through the Law Society for Ontario.<\/p>\n (May 13, 2026)<\/p>\n Today, the Court of Appeal, in partnership with the Ministry of the Attorney General, has launched the Ontario Court of Appeal Public Portal: courtofappeal.ontario.ca<\/a><\/p>\n Unless the Court directs otherwise, parties must file electronic materials through the portal<\/strong>. The Court\u2019s previous email address for filing electronic materials is no longer active and parties cannot use it to submit material to the Court.<\/p>\n The portal can also be used by the public and media to search and view information, including accessing Zoom webinar hearing links. For the time being, this feature is available for civil cases filed on or after August 22, 2022.
