Guidelines: Teleconference and Videoconference Appearances in the Court of Appeal for Ontario

I. CourtCall

CourtCall is a third-party remote appearance service that may be used to make telephone and video appearances at the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Starting May 1, 2017, CourtCall will be available to make appearances for Status Court, Purge Court and Single Judge Motions.

A CourtCall appearance is voluntary. When a CourtCall appearance is requested without consent of the other party, the presiding judge reserves the discretion to require a personal appearance.

To participate in a CourtCall appearance by video, the party needs a computer with sufficient bandwidth, a webcam to view the proceedings, and a fixed telephone line.

To arrange a CourtCall appearance, the interested party should take the following steps:

  1. If you are not already registered with CourtCall, please register at www.courtcall.com.
  2. At least three (3) business days before the hearing, serve and file with CourtCall (not the Court of Appeal) a Request for CourtCall Telephone or Video Appearance (see www.courtcall.com).
  3. For a telephone appearance, pay a fee of $55.00 (CDN) to CourtCall.
  4. For a video appearance, pay a fee of $65 (CDN) to CourtCall.

A confirmation from CourtCall will be emailed or faxed to you upon the filing and payment outlined above.

CourtCall appearances are scheduled during the Court's ordinary sitting times.

Unless notified to the contrary, all parties who have filed a CourtCall Request to Appear by Telephone on a timely basis and have paid the required fee to CourtCall may appear by dialing the toll-free teleconference number provided by CourtCall.

All parties who have filed a CourtCall Request to Appear by Video on a timely basis and have paid the required fee may appear by video by logging in using the link that will be provided and dialing the toll-free teleconference number in the Confirmation sent to you by CourtCall.

A pre-hearing check-in will occur fifteen minutes before the scheduled hearing time.

II. Other Teleconferencing and Videoconferencing Services at the Court of Appeal for Ontario

In addition to the services offered by CourtCall, the Court of Appeal has existing, limited facilities for facilitating a telephone or video appearance. For information about using the Court of Appeal's available facilities, please contact the general inquiry line at 416-327-5020.

Please note that you will also need to use a fixed telephone line to make a telephone appearance using the Court of Appeal's existing facilities. The Court's existing teleconference facilities are not compatible with mobile phone technology.

Videoconferencing Procedures

Please note that you will need to make arrangements with your local courthouse in order to make a video appearance using the Court of Appeal's existing videoconferencing facilities.  In order to schedule a hearing by way of video conference, the Court of Appeal will require the following information which should be forwarded to the Appeal Scheduling Unit at the Court of Appeal for Ontario, by email to COA.E-file@ontario.ca or by fax to (416) 326-6256:

  • the name and file number of the motion or appeal to be heard,
  • the location of the courthouse where the appellant or moving party will
  • attend to participate in the video conference
  • the dial-in numbers for that facility, and
  • a contact for the courthouse.

After providing this information, the Court of Appeal will contact you to advise of the scheduled date and time for the video conferencing hearing.

In order to ensure no delays are encountered when scheduling your video conferencing hearing, please ensure that the Court of Appeal Intake Office is provided with your most up-to-date contact information.
